The camera then reframes again to look out of the window to the Bates house. Off screen Norman is heard shouting to mother. Then you see him running towards the motel room. The camera now follows Norman and we watch him wash away all traces of murder. The dual narrative of Psycho was also incredibly shocking as the comtenpary audience, used to a Classic Hollywood Narrative, would have expected to follow the protagonist, Marion until the end of the film. At this point the audiences sympathies lie with Norman. He is a dutiful son trying to help his psychotic mother. When the beams of a cars head light passes over his face it makes us feel concerned. Also when he drives Marions car into the tar pit and it stops sinking, he looks around nervously. When it finally does disappear we feel relieved for him. Psycho amounted to three blood-chilling moments, the shower scene (which I have concentrated on), the attack on the landing and the mummified corpses in the basement all of which was held together by not very much. This allowed Hitchcock to underline the astonishing impact these scenes would have on the cinema audience. Psycho, which Hitchcock once described as my first horror film is in fact a supinely structured thriller, and its a pretty heartless one at that, for it was made when the directors appeared to have abandoned a warmth for a macabre fascination with the darker aspects of evil. This had never been attempted on screen, which was why Hitchcock sent out directions to the cinema manager allowing for a new cinematic experience to be had by the audience. From its quiet opening (Janet Leigh embezzling her employers money and leaving town) to its shocking climax, it is most artfully put together. Hitchcock cheats outrageously allowing to lead the audience towards sinister expectations that are not fulfilled, nor was theyre any intentions that there should be. False trails abound; car number plates are given a significance that they never deserve. All this was simply the master toying with his audience, playing them along, deluding them, misdirecting them, confident in the knowledge that when the big moments came they would frighten the life out of everyone in the cinema. Due to Psycho, audiences no longer wanted or expected to go to the cinema to watch story, plot, dialogue they went for a cinematic experience Psycho is regarded as a masterpiece in the history of cinema and there is no shock horror movie which is more compulsively watch able. It is outrageously manipulative, its subject matter is essentially banal and yet it is not too much to describe it as the work of a genius. The doors Psycho opened for directors have moved the film industry on more than any other film in history especially in the realms of horror movies.

‘The Suffering in ‘Frankenstein’ is undeserved’ – How far and in what ways do you agree with the view of Shelley’s presentation of suffering? Frankenstein’s characters suffer in a couple of ways, psychologically such as through loneliness or through emotional pain of the death of close ones, and physical suffering. Shelley herself was an only child, so could have been considered lonely when she was younger, and her mother died, which is obviously a death of a close one. While suffering is deserved by some of the characters as they bring it upon themselves, some of the characters are not deserving of their suffering as it is thrust upon them. The creature’s suffering is, at least initially, the most undeserved. He is brought into the world by Frankenstein and is then left, and becomes lonely. We know that the creature has a moral compass after reading books from the De Lacey household, and it would seem that he knew what he was doing was wrong. I believe that the being did not deserve the suffering, however, for the fact that he only became bad because of others. It would mean that if he was born into a better society and treated better by its people, he would not have done what he did. Victor Frankenstein, on the other hand, was deserving of the suffering he endured because a lot of it was his own fault. He keeps his family members at a distance to protect them; however, the protection of his family was probably a cover for wanting to be alone to create the being. He ran away from his own creation, and was egotistical, arrogant, and self-serving. He suffers from illness, the loss of family and friends, and is haunted by the thought of the pursuance of the creature. Frankenstein created â€Å"A new species (that) would bless me as its creator and source†. As you can tell from the quote, the creation was all for selfish reasons and he did not think of the consequences that would occur, leaving the creature, and not looking after him. This led to the creature being lonely, and the suffering caused to Frankenstein was in revenge for this – the creature began killing his family members. Elizabeth in the book is killed, but in the theatre production by Danny Boyle, Elizabeth is raped before being killed, increasing the suffering caused for Frankenstein in the play than compared with the book, and also of course for Elizabeth herself. Also, Frankenstein had gone back on his promise of creating a female being at the request of the creature, which tells you that he treated the creature poorly, showing his deservingness of the suffering he had. His egotistical tendencies can be seen when he refers to Justine – â€Å"The poor victim†¦ felt not as I did, such deep and bitter agony†, showing that he believed his suffering to be worse that the suffering of someone was tried and found guilty of something she had not done. I believe that overall in the book, suffering is undeserved. Frankenstein is the only character that truly deserved to suffer, while the murders of others such as Clerval and Elizabeth were completely undeserved. It could be argued, however, that the reason Frankenstein acted as he did was because he lived in a patriarchal society, where his characteristics were encouraged and were expected. Keeping the being a secret also had a huge impact. Most of the events occurred through the lack of knowledge of the creature to anyone but Frankenstein. For instance, William would not have been allowed to get in a situation with the being to be killed, and if Frankenstein had told the court how Justine was innocent, she would have been found not guilty of this murder.

Les Miserables Throughout peoples lives they will be influenced due to other people and events. There are many ways people can be influenced. In the book Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, three different people influence Jean Valjean. The first influence on Jean was by the bishop. Another influence on Jean was Cosette. A third influence on Jean was Javert. Each of these are people who play a large role in Jean's life. The bishop was one of Jeans first and most important influences involving kindness and forgiveness. The first way that the bishop shows kindness to Jean is by inviting him into his home for dinner and a place to sleep, even though he is an ex-convict and no one else would help him. "Monsieur, sit down and warm yourself: we are going to take supper presently, and you bed will be made ready whil you sup." (Page 26) The next and most powerful act of kindness and forgiveness that the bishop shows to Jean is, when he tells the police that the silver which Jean had actually stole was a gift, and that he had forgotten to take his gift of candlesticks. When the bishop says, "Ah there you are! I am glad to see you, but I gave you the candlesticks too, which are also silver and will bring you two hundred francs"(Page 38). When the bishop say's this, Jean Valjean is filled with surprise and disbelief, and did not know what to do. From that day on Jean would remember the bis hop and his kindness towards him, and use this memory to help others. Javert has many different types of influences on Jean. One way that Javert influences Jean is by sending him to the galleys for the first time even though he was just stealing to feed his family. Jean was turned cold and cruel by this, he thought that the whole world was as cruel as Javert seemed to be. This cruelty only leads Jean into more trouble. "See, there is where he got out; he jumped down Cochefilet lane. The abominable fellow! He has stolen our silver!" (Page 37) This shows that even after Jean was released from the galleys he was hardened from the influences and still was a thief. The second way that Javert influences Jean is by testing Jeans new side of kindness and gratitude by sending him to the galleys a second time, for saving a wrongfully accused man.
